The Trade & Health Academy at Garden City High School is this week's Superintendent's School of the Week. Here are some things to know about GCHS Principal Steve Nordby and Associate Principal Ryan Meng:
How long have you been the principal at your current school?
Mr. Nordby: I have been at GCHS since 2012. I spent 3 years as an Associate Principal and am now finishing my 8th year as Head Principal.
Mr. Meng: I have been an Associate Principal for 8 years.
What led you to teaching and what prompted your decision to become a principal?
Mr. N: My teachers and coaches were role models for me growing up and that led to be wanting to go into education. I was drawn to becoming a principal by the opportunity to work with adults and students to make an impact in our community.
Mr. M: I began my work in schools in a school social worker position. I quickly discovered that education is what I wanted to do. I enjoyed working with young people so I earned my teaching degree after seven years of working as the GCHS social worker. After six years of teaching, I was hired as an associate principal. It felt like the next step in a natural progression.
What are your hobbies or how do you spend your days off?
Mr. N: On my days off, I like to travel with my wife. We like to attend concerts whenever we get the chance.
Mr. M: I enjoy yardwork, traveling, and watching my children's activities.
What makes a ‘good day’ at school?
Mr. N: A good day at GCHS is one where I can watch students and teachers create something new and develop skills that they didn't know they had.
Mr. M: If I've been able to visit multiple classrooms, interact positively with students, and have a conversation with a colleague, then it was a good day.
What accomplishments fill you with pride so far this year?
Mr. M: There are too many to mention but one of my favorite trends this year is the dramatic increase in positive referrals. It means so much to a student when a staff member takes the time to enter a special note of recognition in a student’s official record. It has been really difficult for me to notify students in a timely manner which is a good challenge to have!
What inspires you?
Mr. N: I am inspired every day by the work ethic, humility and generosity of our students and staff.
