Governor Laura Kelly visited USD 457 today to discuss the district's Teacher Apprentice Program. The program was started in 2019 with the intent to recruit and train locals to be teachers in an area where that are dozens of open teacher positions. The Teacher Apprentice Program is the first of its kind in Kansas.
Apprenticeship participants can enter the program with only a high school diploma or GED. They work as a paraprofessional while completing coursework from both Garden City Community College and Wichita State University. Some participants come right out of high school, but many join as second career in their 30s and 40s. Twenty-eight total participants have started the program and, so far, nine have finished and are employed as teachers.

Horace Good Middle School students will present Disney's Beauty and the Beast JR. on April 14th and 15th at Clifford Hope Auditorium. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students.
