Board of Education Meeting Recap January 15

Garden City Public Schools Board of Education met during a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, January 15, 2024. The meeting was held at the Educational Support Center Board Room, 1205 Fleming Street. 

 The Board of Education voted on a resolution to establish election of school board officers in July. The current president of the board is John Wiese and the current vice-president of the board is Jackie Gigot.

 January is School Board Recognition Month and Garden City Public Schools is joining other school districts across the state to acknowledge the important contributions local school board members make to their community.  The Garden City Public Schools Board of Education members include: Robin Bergkamp, Andy Fahrmeier, Jackie Gigot, Nathan Haeck, Mark Hinde, Randy Ralston, and John Wiese.

 Under New Business, the board received an Enrollment Analysis from RSP & Associates. The group provided past enrollment and demographics of the district. They provided development and growth trends of the community. They also provided enrollment projections for the district. The Board looked at the guiding principles for the Boundary Committee and set the criteria for the committee that will have the most influence on the creation of new the attendance areas. The criteria chosen by the board were Fiscal Consideration Operational Cost, Students Impacted by Boundary Changes, Projected Enrollment/Utilization, and Duration of Boundaries.  More information about the Boundary Study can be found here.

The Board approved the purchase of Harris Solutions eTrition Front of House and Back of House Software for $28,876 and a new walk-in freezer unit along with a condenser/evaporator for Gertrude Walker Elementary School.  There was discussion on a new HVAC system at Abe Hubert Elementary School and a designed HVAC system for Plymell Elementary School.

 The Board discussed Committee Assignments for the coming year on committees that board members will serve on at the district.

The Board approved the following items during the meeting. They include: Minutes of the  December 21, 2023, regular meeting; floor covering for Charles Stones Intermediate Center, Gertrude Walker Elementary School, Plymell Elementary School, and Victor Ornelas Elementary School; purchase of GCHS Welding Waterjet from Wazer for $11,999.00; Custodial Equipment from Pur O Zone for $31,207.82; Alta Brown Playground update for $95,998.90; Victor Ornelas Playground update from Next Generation Recreation for $124,294.83; fence at Georgia Matthews Elementary School from Taylor True Value Hardware for $16,171.20; Bulk Copy Paper from Greenbush for $28,812.00; the Board of Education Standards; a Resolution to Establish Board Meeting Dates and Times; and Board Meetings for July: July 8 and July 22, 2024.

The next regularly meeting of the Board of Education will be Monday, February 5, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming Street.
