Recap Board of Education

Garden City Public Schools Board of Education met on Monday, September 14, 2026.  The meeting was held at the Educational Support Center Board Room, 1205 Fleming Street. 

The Board received a building presentation from Garfield Early Childhood Center. Students from the school led the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. The school presented its goals for the school year and enrollment at the school. Students from the school presented how they start the day and end the day.

The Board approved the following items during the meeting. They include minutes of the August 27, 2026, hearing on the 2026-2027 budget. The minutes of the August 27, 2026, Regular Board of Education Meeting. Accounts Payable, with all major accounts containing adequate balances to meet current obligations. Personnel certified and classified actions. Out-of-State travel for Garden City High School for 2026-27. Updated Memorandum of Understanding agreement with Compass Behavioral Health for the Mental Health Intervention Team for 2026-27.

The Board received an enrollment presentation that provides the projected official K-12 headcount for the September 20, 2026 count date, which will be on Monday, September 21, this year, the current enrollment realities, and the planning implications for staffing, program capacity, and grade reconfiguration. Like most of the state of Kansas, USD 457 has experienced a sustained decline in official K-12 enrollment over the last decade.

Under new business, there was a first reading of Curriculum Council items regarding a new request for high school Sports Med II, which is adjusting course credit from a semester course to a year-long course.  There was also a first read of the Middle School PreCTE course name change to align with state names.

They approved Board of Education Policies: JGFGBA Student Self-Administration of Medications, EE Food Services Management, and IDAD Title I Programs.

They also approved a Managed Printing Contract with Century Business for $187,776.00.  They approved a bid for two used Chevrolet Malibu sedans for the Parents As Teachers program from Lewis Motors for $41,998.00.

At the end of the meeting, the Board held two executive sessions. The first was for consultation with an attorney for the body or agency, which would be deemed privileged in an attorney-client relationship. The second was for personnel matters for non-elected personnel. No action was taken after the executive sessions.

The next meeting of the Board of Education will take place on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at 5:00 P.M. in the Board Meeting Room at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming St., Garden City, Kansas.
