Garden City Public Schools Board of Education met on Monday, August 10, 2026. The meeting was held at the Educational Support Center Board Room, 1205 Fleming Street.
The Board approved the following items during the meeting. They include minutes of the July 30, 2026, Regular Board of Education Meeting. Accounts Payable, with all major accounts containing adequate balances to meet current obligations. Personnel certified and classified actions. A quote for the Kenneth Henderson Middle School FACP replacement from Johnson Controls for $36,525.32. A Memorandum of Agreement between the district and the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services (KDADS) for the 2026-27 school year. A Professional Services Agreement by and between RSP & Associates LLC and the school district. The Professional Development Council Handbook.
There was an update on staffing in the district. The district has 566.5 certified staff, 585 classified staff, and 51 administrators for this school year. There have been increases in certified and classified staff with a direct connection to the classroom to strengthen classroom and school-level support. There has been a reduction of administrators in the district. The district has increased investment in the people serving students every day while reducing administrative salary spending. The district currently has six long-term substitute teachers who are on track to complete their teaching degrees within the next two years.
They received a FY2026-27 Budget Presentation and Building Needs Assessment. Jessica Nothern, Chief Financial Officer, provided the report to the Board. There are targeted investments to remove operational barriers. The five priorities are: Staffing and Retention, creating workforce stability; Behavior and SEL Supports, providing classroom readiness to learn; Academic Intervention, precision academic support; Professional Development, instructional quality and alignment; and ESL and Family Outreach, equity and access for all learners. The staff is recommending a proposed mill levy rate of 51.000 mills that is down from last year’s mill levy rate of 51.418 mills.
Under new business, the Board approved a bid from Burtis Motor Company for an 8-Passenger vehicle for $57,432.00. They also approved a bid for a pickup from Burtis Motor Company for $61,629.00.
There were first reads on a bid for generator replacement at Florence Wilson Elementary School from Cummins Sales and Services for $34,650.00. A quote to strip, seal, and re-coat two tennis courts at Garden City High School with a Greenbush quote from Mammoth Sports Construction for $49,750.00.
The Board also held a first read of the following Board of Education policies. They included: JBCB Foster Care Students, JBCB Foster Care Student Regulations, JGFGAA Stock Supply of Emergency Medication, and JBD Absences and Excuses.
They approved Mark Hinde as the delegate and Katie Cole as the alternate delegate for the Kansas Association of School Boards (KASB) Delegate Assembly on Saturday, November 7, 2026, as part of the KASB Annual Convention.
The next meeting of the Board of Education will be Thursday, August 27, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming Street.
