Gertrude Walker is the namesake of one of the 11 elementary schools in the USD 457 school district. The district has named many of its school buildings after outstanding educators.
Walker began her teaching career in 1945 at Buffalo Jones Elementary School and Garfield Elementary School. She completed her Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of Northern Colorado in 1958. She officially retired from teaching in 1963; however, she did substitute work for both Garden City Public Schools as well as the Catholic School, where she was affectionately known as "Sister Gertrude".
