Garden City Public Schools will be celebrating Read Across America Week, which runs from March 2–6, 2026. Read Across America is a week-long nationwide movement filled with exciting events intended to spark a love of reading for students.
March brings all things reading to light with National Reading Month and Read Across America Week celebrations. Launched in 1998 by the National Education Association (NEA) and guided by a committee of educators, NEA’s Read Across America is the nation’s largest celebration of reading. This year-round program focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnerships, and reading resources that are about everyone, for everyone. This year, Garden City Education Association (GCEA) will be collaborating with individual school buildings and inviting community members to read in classrooms across the district.
Additionally, there will be themed days throughout the week to help celebrate Read Across America.
Monday is Read Your Way (Cozy & Relaxed) – PJ Day
Tuesday is Read, White, and Blue Day – Wear the colors of the flag
Wednesday is Reading Takes us Places Day – Wear tourist clothing, or outfits from different cultures.
Thursday is It Takes a Team Day – Wear your favorite team, band, or character group.
Friday is Reading Unites Us Day – Wear your School/Academy Colors!
The titles and resources featured by NEA’s Read Across America include books that students can see themselves reflected in, as well as books that allow readers to see a world or a character that might be different than them. Readers who feel included, recognized, and a part of the world are engaged readers.
