Garden City Public Schools Board of Education met on Monday, August 11, 2025. The meeting was held at the Educational Support Center Board Room, 1205 Fleming Street.
The Board approved the following items during the meeting. They include minutes of the July 22, 2025, meeting/retreat and the July 24, 2025, regular meeting. Accounts Payable with all major accounts containing adequate balances to meet current obligations. Personnel certified and classified actions. The 2025-26 Curriculum Council Handbook, and disposal of curriculum resources no longer in use in the district. The Drug Testing Service Agreement between Revere Healthcare Solutions Inc. (RHS) and the district. The purchase of Teach Town student licenses for LEAP/Life Skills special education programs for $23,484.00. The School Resource Officer Agreement between the City of Garden City, Kansas (City), the Garden City Police Department (GCPD) and the district. The Crossing Guard Agreement between the City of Garden City, Kansas (City), and the district. A Memorandum of Understanding between the City of Garden City, Kansas, Garden City Police Department and the district for the School Resource Officer Program.
Interim Deputy Superintendent, Drew Thon, provided an update on staffing in the school district. We hired more than we separated from for the second year in a row. There were 63 total hires and 53 separations. There are 47 teachers from five different states and there are 16 international teachers. There are 30 long-term substitute teachers going into the 2025-26 school year. The district had 43 long-term substitute teachers last year and there were over 70 three years ago. There are 18 of the 30 long-term substitute teachers that are in programs working toward a teaching degree. There are six advanced student teachers filling vacant positions. There are four traditional student teachers that could be hired to fill vacancies in the Spring of 2026.
Under new business, the Board approved the East Side Pedestrian Pathway Project: ROW/Easement Request. Approved the purchase of Fire Alarm Panel Upgrade at Horace Good Middle School from Johnson Controls for $24,837.00. Presentation of the 2025-26 Budget. The Board elected Mark Hinde as a delegate and Nathan Haeck as an alternate delegate for the Kansas Association of School Boards' Delegate Assembly on Saturday, November 15, 2025, as part of the KASB Annual Convention. The Board signed up for Board of Education Committee Assignments for 2025-26 school year. There was discussion on Board Member Stipend.
The Board held two executive sessions after the completion of all other business. The first executive session was for consultation with an attorney for the body or agency which would be deemed privileged in an attorney-client relationship. The second executive session was for personnel matters for non-elected personnel. No action was taken after the executive sessions.
The next meeting of the Board of Education will be Thursday, August 28, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming Street.
