Garden City Public Schools school bus driver, Jerry Guerrero, has demonstrated exceptional skill and professionalism by securing 11th place in the highly competitive 51st Edition of the School Bus Driver International Safety Competition (SBDISC). The event was held on June 28-29, 2025, in Austin, Texas.
Hosted by the National School Transportation Association (NSTA), the SBDISC is a prominent event designed to showcase the dedication and expertise of school bus drivers from across the nation and internationally. Mr. Guerrero, listed as Contestant #6 in the competition, achieved a noteworthy total score of 464.9 points across the various challenging events.
The competition evaluates a wide range of skills essential for safe school bus operation, including specific maneuvers such as straight-line driving, backing up, left and right turns, parallel offset, and railroad crossings, as well as diminishing clearance, student load procedures, and curbline navigation. Competitors are also judged on general knowledge/inspection, surprise events, and stop line accuracy.
Guerrero's strong performance among a field of highly skilled drivers is a testament to his commitment to safety and his professional driving abilities. The NSTA extended its congratulations to all participating drivers, acknowledging their dedication and professionalism.
The Garden City Public Schools Transportation Department has 35 professional drivers and 11 personnel that work to safely transport around 1,900 students per day, as well as 200 special needs students with daily door-to-door service. The school buses travel a total of 2,800 miles per day or approximately 529,200 miles per school year. The department covers 186 routes across the district during each morning and afternoon.
