Garden City Public Schools Board of Education met during a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, May 19, 2025. The meeting was held at the Educational Support Center Board Room, 1205 Fleming Street.
The Board received a building presentation from Plymell Elementary School. The school presented about the great things that are happening at the facility this school year. Students from the school led the opening of the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance.
The Board recognized staff completing LETRS training. At the end of the 2024-2025 school year, the district has 125 additional staff members completing their LETRS training. LETRS is commitment that both the district and state have participated in to increase teacher knowledge regarding how students learn to read and write.
The Board approved the following items during the meeting. They include minutes of the May 5, 2025, regular meeting. Accounts Payable with all major accounts containing adequate balances to meet current obligations. Personnel certified and classified actions. Quotes from Creative Floors to sand, seal, paint game lines and lettering, and finish on gym floors at Florence Wilson Elementary School and Abe Hubert Elementary School. Curriculum Council items: GCCC American Literature ll, GCCC Argument & Critical Thinking, GCCC Art History l, GCCC Art History ll, GCCC Child Development l, GCCC Course Name Changes, GCCC Diversity in Society, GCCC Environmental Science, GCCC General Physical Science and Lab, GCCC Intro to Social Work, GCCC Social Problems, GCCC Sociology of the Families, GCCC Survey of Civilization ll, and GCCC Understanding Old Testament. Replacement of the marquee sign in front of Buffalo Jones Elementary School from Signs Plus.
Under Board reports, there was a presentation on the progress of the Engage After School Program. Data was shared on student progress at the buildings that are served by the program. The District Alternative Education Placement report on how to create an alternative to expulsion to help students continue in the curriculum and earn credits if applicable. They received an end-of-year summary and analysis of the district’s first year implementing of student drug testing at the secondary level. 264 tests were conducted across Garden City High School, Horace Good Middle School, Kenneth Henderson Middle School, and Garden City Achieve.
Under new business, the Board approved the Performing Arts staff at GCHS to move forward on planning their next out of state trip to New York, New York for the summer of 2026. They approved the following equipment: Door Dishwasher for Alta Brown and Georgia Mathews, Under Counter Dishwasher for Jennie Barker, Steamer for Horace Good, Ovens (2 each) for Kenneth Henderson and Garden City High School, and Hot Box for Horace Good. Renewal of the Kansas Association of School Boards Membership for 2025-26. A contract with LiveWell Finney County to provide Teen Intervene services. Teen Intervene is a brief, evidence-based intervention program designed for adolescents ages 12 to 19 who display early signs of alcohol, vaping, or other substance use (the “Program”).
The Board held an executive session after the completion of all other business. The executive session was for matters relating to employer-employee negotiations, whether or not in consultation with the representative or representatives of the body or agency. No action was taken after the executive sessions.
The next meeting of the Board of Education will be held on Monday, June 2, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming Street.
