Board of Education Meeting Recap

Garden City Public Schools Board of Education met during a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, October 21, 2024. The meeting was held at the Educational Support Center Board Room, 1205 Fleming Street. 

The Board recognized Garden City High School Buffalo Athletic Hall of Fame. This year was the sixth class to be inducted since 2019 and brings the total inductees to 42. Inductees this year included two separate categories by timelines – the Buffalo Legends era (pre-1960) and the Modern Era (1960 to present).

 

The Buffalo Legends Era inductees included brothers Hollis and Ralph Hope, who starred in track and field, basketball and football from 1916 to 1922. Boys’ basketball coach Clinton Keller, who coached from 1945 to 1953. The 1920 undefeated football team that holds all the school team scoring records.

 

In the Modern Era, the 1998 and 1999 state champion wrestling teams were inducted. Boys’ basketball coach Curtis Shipley (1964 to 1970) was honored posthumously. Two student-athletes capped off the night’s inductions as 1970s track and field standout JoEva Tuttle joined 2003 football/basketball star Chris Nelson as the final inductees.

 

The Board received a report on Fall Learning Report - KAP Data from Heather Stegman, Director of Instruction, and Michelle Baier, Curriculum and Instruction Coordinator. KAP is the Kansas State Assessment program. Students are tested once a year in grades 3 – 8 and grade 10 over content in ELA and Math. Students are tested only in grades 5, 8, and 11 over content in Science.

The Board also received a Long-Range Facilities Plan update from Brandon Anderson, Director of Plant Facilities.

Under the new business section, the Board had a first read on a number of Curriculum Council Items that included the addition of a new course, Peer Leadership 2, as a .5 credit elective course; and the addition of a new course, GCHS Honors Government, as a .5 credit elective course.  They also held a first read on Architect/Engineering Proposals and on Edith Scheuerman Elementary Playground Equipment. They approved the roofing project at Bernadine Sitts Intermediate Center.

Under unfinished business, the board approved a preventative maintenance agreement for a one-year term from TATRO for $89,125.00.

The Board approved the following items during the meeting. They include minutes of the October 7, 2024, regular meeting. Accounts Payable with all major accounts containing adequate balances to meet current obligations. Personnel certified and classified actions. Four route buses for $461,200.00 and three SUVs for $175,732.00 for the Transportation Department.

The Board held an executive session after the completion of all other business. The executive session was for personnel matters relating to non-elected personnel. There was no action taken after the executive session.

 

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Education will be Monday, November 4, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming Street.
