Board of Education Meeting Recap May 20, 2024

Garden City Public Schools Board of Education met during a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, May 20, 2024. The meeting was held at the Educational Support Center Board Room, 1205 Fleming Street. 

The Board recognized Georgia Matthews Elementary School as the Pop Tab Challenge winning school that supports Ronald McDonald House in Wichita.  Janet Reed who has run the program for a number of years introduced Amy Burch who will be taking over the program in the district.

The Board received a building presentation from Jennie Wilson Elementary School. The school was awarded the 2023-2024 Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase Schools award. This distinction directly reflects the unwavering dedication and collaborative efforts of students, staff, and the entire school community. The recognition of a Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase Schools award serves as a testament to the commitment held by the campus community to foster a positive and nurturing learning environment.

Jamie Schweer, Engage After School Program Coordinator, provided a report on the program and the progress of the students in the program. The focus of the program is to help close the gap between Tier 3 & 2 students and their piers. It is a very structured program for the educational areas of need. 

Under New Business, the Board approved the Southwest Plains Interlocal Agreement. They approved the following Curriculum Council items: Virtual Success Strategies; Middle School Computing Systems; Middle School Computer Graphics; Intro to Leader in Me at Garden City Achieve; the TNTP Gradual Release Quote for $77,995.00; a Memorandum of Understanding between the district and SparkWheel, Inc. for the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 school years for $30,000.00; a quote from Xello for the period of Jul 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025, for $12,635.75; an agreement between the district and Heather T. Forbes for $15,000.00.

The Board discussed flooring across the district. The Board previously approved a flooring project at Gertrude Walker Elementary School as part of the long-range facility plan. There was discussion during the boundary study of repurposing Gertrude Walker Elementary School in the future. The Board did approve to continue with putting down the flooring at Gertrude Walker Elementary School.

They also approved the following items during the meeting. They include: Minutes of the May 6, 2024, regular meeting, Certified and Classified Personnel actions, and the continuation of Renaissance Learning, an existing curriculum for $128,240.00.

The Board held three executive sessions after the completion of all other business. The first executive session was for matters relating to employer-employee negotiations, whether or not in consultation with the representative or representatives of the body or agency.  The second executive session was for consultation with an attorney for the body or agency which would be deemed privileged in an attorney-client relationship. The third executive session was for personnel matters for non-elected personnel. No action was taken at the end of each of the executive sessions.

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Education will be Monday, June 3, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming Street.
