Board of Education  Meeting Recap April 15

Garden City Public Schools Board of Education met during a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, April 15, 2024. The meeting was held at the Educational Support Center Board Room, 1205 Fleming Street. 

 The Board recognized Kansas National Education Association (KNEA) Just Imagine Justice campaign award winners. Angelina Garcia, Athena Valdez, Jolie Nguyen, Mia Terrazas, Reece Kraus and Zarah Young were selected as winners in the 2023-24 Student Expression Campaign for their projects completed in educator sponsor Becca Burnfin’s History class. These students have secured either a $1,000 first-place or $500 second-place cash scholarship in six of ten awards selected by the KNEA. All winners were recognized at the 2023/2024 KNEA Representative Assembly on April 5th and 6th in Wichita. 

 The Board received a building presentation from Georgia Matthews Elementary School. Students from the third grade introduced themselves and what they liked about the school. Bryan Kott, principal of the school, presented information about the school and the great things that they are doing to educate the students at the school.

The Board did not take any action on a design by ICE Engineers for the Abe Hubert HVAC system replacement for $127,500.00. They are needing more information before making a decision on the project.

Under New Business, the Board reviewed information from Matt Allen, City Manager with the City of Garden City, provided information on projected growth in the community.  He presented residential construction projects within Garden City or in the immediate area of the community. The projects are in some form of design or are being constructed out over the next three years. The City Commission has a goal of 4,000 new housing units by 2030. Finney County Economic Development has a set goal of 6,000 housing units in Finney County by the same timeline.

Mike Muirhead, Director of Public Works and Utilities with the City of Garden City, presented a request of an easement by Garden City High School for a water line and sanitary sewer line for development in the area. No action was taken on the item.

They approved the purchase of custodial equipment from Pur-O-Zone for $104,526.86.

They also approved the following items during the meeting. They include: Minutes of the April 1, 2024, regular meeting; and Certified and Classified Personnel actions.

 

The Board held two executive sessions after the completion of all other business. The first executive session was for matters relating to employer-employee negotiations, whether or not in consultation with the representative or representatives of the body or agency. The second executive session was for personnel matters for non-elected personnel. No action was taken at the end of each of the executive sessions.

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Education will be Monday, May 6, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming Street.
