Board of Education Meeting Recap March 4

Garden City Public Schools Board of Education met during a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, March 4, 2024. The meeting was held at the Educational Support Center Board Room, 1205 Fleming Street. 

 The Board received a building presentation from Bernadine Sitts Intermediate Center. The BSIC STUCO members and representatives explained the positive events that have happened so far during the school year along with providing Fastbridge Data.

The Board received an update from on what the Boundary Committee has been working on.  The group has looked at and participated in high-level discussion of the grade configuration options. RSP and Associates presented the last boundary study committee meeting and shared with the board the unanimous consensus of the committee.
The committee is looking at changing the grade configuration of the district to a Kindergarten-5th grade model (K-5, 6-8). The committee is looking at:
• Changes the Middle School programming (adds 6th grade)
• All elementary schools would be impacted by either losing or adding a grade
• Utilizes 13 elementary buildings and 2 middle school buildings
The board provided direction to district leadership and the boundary study committee on how they would like the committee to proceed through the process. The Board also re-considered the timeline of the study and the scheduling of additional meetings. They approved $19,750 additional funding and a new timeline with additional meetings.

Under New Business the Board approved a new course offering of Sports Medicine II as a 0.5 credit elective option. They also approved the purchase of land at 2401 E. Mary Street. The price of the land is $660,000.00. This property borders Garden City High School. It will allow the district to grow as needed in the future.  

They approved the following items during the meeting. They include: Minutes of the February 19, 2024, regular meeting; and Certified and Classified Personnel actions; E-Rate bids for Internet, Bus WiFi, Access Points, Switches, and UPS Technology.  The Safety and Security Plan; the Long Range Facilities Plan; the 2024-25 school calendar with the first day of school on Wednesday, August 14, 2024; partnership agreement between the district and Jobs for America’s Graduates - - Kansas (JAG-K) for the 2024-25 school year.

The Board held three executive sessions after the completion of all other business. The first executive session was for matters relating to employer-employee negotiations, whether or not in consultation with the representative or representatives of the body or agency. Consultation with an attorney for the body or agency which would be deemed privileged in an attorney-client relationship. The second executive session was for consultation with an attorney for the body or agency which would be deemed privileged in an attorney-client relationship. The third was for personnel matters for non-elected personnel. No action was taken at the end of each of the executive sessions.

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Education will be Thursday, March 21, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming Street.
