Board of Education Meeting Recap September 11

Garden City Public Schools Board of Education met during a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, September 11, 2023. The meeting was held at the Educational Support Center Board Room, 1205 Fleming Street.

The board did not take any action on the 2023-2024 budget. The postponement on a public hearing and taking a vote on the budget was due to a delay of the publication of the budget in the newspaper. The rescheduling of the hearing will allow for the mandatory ten-day requirements to be met before formal action takes place on the budget. The board will take up the budget in a public hearing on Monday, September 18, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming Street.

The board approved a number of purchases under the new business section.  The items include: Storage Building Shelves from Global Industrial for $37,596.48; bleachers for Kenneth Henderson Middle School from Heartland Seating for $88,271.00; a pre-owned pickup for Plant Facilities for $67,500.00; a Yale Material Handler for Plant Facilities for $22,746.00; a Mid–Size SUV for Transportation for $45,000.00; a Mid–Size Sedan for Transportation for $29,950.00; and Functional Academics curriculum for RISE classrooms for $17,700.00.  They also approved IEP Reviewer Services Agreement and the updated Long Term Sub Agreement.

There was a first read on the purchase of Boardworks K-12 Education Suite. The program provides a wealth of supplemental, innovative, and inspiring ready-made resources mapped to the Kansas State Standards. It is designed to empower teachers to help optimize technology and enhance teaching and learning practices through exciting and engaging lessons that are accessible on any web-enabled device. There was no action taken on the item. It will be on the consent agenda for the next regular board meeting.

The board approved the following items during the meeting. They include: Minutes of the August 28 regular meeting; the 2023 -24 Child Nutrition and Wellness Department Staff Handbook; School Psychologist Intern Agreement; the revised Board Policy GAOA Drug-Free Workplace using Alternative 1; continuing with current Board Policy GBQA Reduction of Teaching Staff; and revised Board Policy KN Complaints.
