Board of Education Meeting Recap August 14

Garden City Public Schools Board of Education met on Monday, August 14, 2023.  The meeting was held at the Educational Support Center Board Room, 1205 Fleming Street. 

The board received an update on staffing from Dr. Joe Alcorta, Chief HR Officer.  The district has hired 12 elementary teachers, six intermediate center teachers, four middle school teachers and six high school teachers along with six Special Education teachers for a total of 34 new teachers for the 2023-24 school year. 

They continued their discussion on a possible partnership between the district and the Little Leaders of GCK.  After a split vote of three-three the board did not move forward with the partnership with the organization. Randy Ralston abstained from voting on the issue.

Under new business, the board heard from Colleen Drees, Chief Financial Officer, on the 2023-24 budget. The mill levy will continue to be at its current level of 49.4 mills.   

They voted on the election of delegate and alternate delegate for the Kansas Association of School Board’s Delegate Assembly on Saturday, November 11, 2023, as part of the KASB Annual Convention.  John Wiese was approved as the delegate and Jackie Gigot was appointed as the alternate delegate. 

They had a first read and discussed Board Policy GAAF Emergency Safety Interventions; Board Policy GARID Military Leave; Board Policy IFCC Overnight Accommodations; Board Policy JH Student Activities; and Board Policy KK Disposal of District Property.  There was no action taken on the policies.  They will take them up again at the next board meeting and vote on them.

High-quality professional development needs; identify strategies to meet needs of high-risk students; and attract and retain staff. 

The board held an executive session after the completion of all other business.  The executive session was for personnel matters of nonelected personnel and job performance because if this matter were discussed in open session it might invade the privacy of those discussed. No action was taken after the executive session.

 After the executive session, Dana Nanninga made a motion that the Board of Education accept her resignation.  There was a second to the motion and the board voted to accept her resignation from the Board of Education.

 The board approved the following items during the meeting.  They include: Minutes of the July 24 regular meeting and the July 27 special meeting; the Law Enforcement Officer Assignment Agreement between the City of Garden City and district Schools for the 2023-24 school year for $283,280.86; the Crossing Guard Agreement between the City of Garden City and district for the 2023-24 school year; the revised Board Policy EBC, Security and Safety; the Change Order Request from Meridian Roofing Solutions on gutter work for $39,650; the Change Order Request from Meridian Roofing Solutions for new coping cap for $3,315; and the Change Order Request from Meridian Roofing Solutions for gutter and downspouts for a credit of $2,572. A Founding Sponsorship Agreement between Western State Bank of Garden City and the district for the period from August 1, 2023 to May 31, 2028; An Anchor Sponsorship Agreement between Tyson Shared Services and the district for the period from August 14, 2023 to December 31, 2027. An Automotive Technology Cooperative Agreement between Garden City Community College and the district.

 The next meeting of the Board of Education will be Monday, August 28, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming Street.
