Board of Education  Meeting Recap April 17

The USD 457 Board of Education met Monday, April 17, during a regularly scheduled meeting. The meeting was held in the Educational Support Center Board Room, 1205 Fleming Street.

The board received a building presentation from Gertrude Walker Elementary School.  They

school is doing many things to increase student growth and enhance literacy.  The school is doing many things to increase student growth and enhance literacy.

 Information was provided on Individual Plans of Study from Mindy Greene, Mary Guymon, Kellie Pitts, and Kristina Younkman.  Students explore different careers then focus their studies on that career area.

Victor Ornelas Elementary School was spotlighted during the meeting on presenting their Wildly Important Goals.  The school is focusing lesson that are “Authentically Engaging” for all students.

The board heard a presentation about Career and Technical Education (CTE) from Jenny Hands, Career and Technical Education Coordinator. She presented the two Garden City High School seniors that have been named 2023 Kansas CTE Scholars, Anna Lobmeyer and Kathy Vo.  She explained the process and how they were selected for this prestigious state award.

They received information on the adoption of High School PE Curriculum from Heather Stegman, Curriculum and Instruction Coordinator. No action was taken on the item. The board will look at voting on the item at the next board meeting.

The board approved the following items during the meeting. They include the minutes of the April 3, 2023, Board of Education meeting; Plant Facilities Storage Building: dirt work bid from Stoppel Dirt for $43,030.75; electrical bid from Davis Electric, Inc. for $25,780.00; overhead doors bid from Overhead Door Company for $11,492.00; and Post Frame bid from Quality Structures, Inc. for $153,540.00. Fire alarm install for Abe Hubert Elementary from Davis Electric, state contract bid for $137,450.00; and fire alarm install at the Educational Support Center from Davis Electric, state contract bid for $53,610.00.  Adoption of Curriculum Council items: TCI Regions of Our Country - History 4th Grade and Spark – Elementary PE – K-6.  Videoboards and Scorer’s Table at Garden City High School from Daktronics for $930,672.00. Service Agreement with TNTP for Professional Development for $320,047.00.

The next meeting of the Board of Education will be Monday, May 1, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. in the Educational Support Center Board Room, 1205 Fleming Street.
