KS licensure process for KS graduates:

  2. Complete and submit online FORM 1 license application. Click Here to start the application process. You will be instructed to set-up a username/password and create profile on the Kansas Licensure Application System (KLAS) to access FORM 1. Contact your university advisor for specific licensure instructions.

KS licensure process for out-of-state teachers:

Types of Licenses

Initial License

Valid for two years from date of issuance.

Requirements: bachelor’s degree, completion of a teacher education program, pedagogical and content assessments, eight semester hours of recent credit.

One-Year Nonrenewable License

Valid only through June 30th of the school year for which the license is issued. A nonrenewable license is issued to applicants who meet all other requirements for an initial license except the assessments.

Exchange License

Valid for two years from date of issuance.

Requirements: bachelor’s degree, completion of a teacher education program (from Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Wisconsin), pedagogical and content assessments, eight semester hours of recent credit.

Restricted License

Valid for the school year in which the license is issued. Any restricted teaching license may be reissued for two additional consecutive school years if progress reports are submitted.

Requirements: bachelor’s degree in content area or with equivalent coursework in the area for which the restricted license is sought with minimum 2.75 grade point average, passing score on content assessment, hired by accredited school with plan of study on file, and assigned a mentor.

Transitional License

Valid for the school year in which the license is issued and nonrenewable.

Requirements: previously held an initial or professional license that has been expired six months or longer, verification of accredited experience during transitional license is required to reinstate the expired initial license.

Professional License

Valid for five years from date of issuance.

Requirements: completion of teaching performance assessment while employed in an accredited school and one year of recent experience or eight semester hours of recent credit.

Emergency Substitute License

First substitute license is valid only through June 30th of the school year for which the license is issued. Renewed substitute licenses are valid for two years with end date of June 30th of second year.

Requirements: 60 semester hours of general education coursework, professional education coursework, or a combination of these types of coursework.
