The USD 457 Board of Education met Monday, September 13th, during a regularly scheduled meeting.  The meeting was held at the Educational Support Center Board Room. The meeting was conducted with social distancing protocols to make sure the public, Board members, and school staff involved in the meeting were safe.

There was a hearing for the 2021-22 Budget during the meeting.  No one from the public spoke to the board about the budget during the hearing.  The proposed mill levy will increase by 0.6 to 49.4 mills up from 48.8 mills. The board voted to approve the budget and adoption of the Resolution to Exceed the Revenue Neutral Tax Rate. 

The board heard an update on the AVID program in the district. Jenny Hands, Coordinator of Career and Technical Education and Virginia Duncan, Associate Principal at Garden City High School, presented information to the board about how they are implementing the program as part of the board’s goals.  

The board discussed an agreement with Brett A. Marshall to research the history of Garden City High School and write a book on the history of the high school.  The board did not take any action on this and will take it up for a vote at the next board meeting. 

The board heard and update on where COVID is at in the community and in the district.  There was also discussion on COVID protocols in the district with students and staff members. The COVID data can be found under the Start of School link on the district’s website at

The board approved the following items during the meeting.  The items approved include: Second Revised Attendance Officers appointment; Revised Resolution to Appoint Hearing Officers/Committee Members to Hear Extended Term Suspension/Expulsion Due Process Hearings; List #2 for student exemptions to participate in remote learning; and changing the name of Garden City Alternate Education Center to GC Achieve at J.D. Adams Hall.

The board held an executive session regarding personnel matters for non-elected personnel.  There was no action taken after the board exited the executive session.

The next meeting of the Board of Education will be Thursday, September 23, 2021, at 5:00 p.m.
