Garden City Public Schools Board of Education met on Monday, November 7, 2022.  The meeting was held at the Educational Support Center Board Room, 1205 Fleming Street. 

Edith Scheuerman Elementary School students lead the board in the Pledge of Allegiance to start the meeting.  The board recognized the school for receiving a Civic Advocacy Award. The school provided a building presentation. The school provided information on the various things they are doing to educate and engage students.

Steve Nordby, Principal at Garden City High School, Lucas Sullivan, Principal at GC Achieve, and Kathleen Moorman, Principal at the Virtual Academy, provided information about the district’s graduation rate. Garden City High School has been above 90 percent and increasing for the last three years, while the state average has been around 88 percent. GC Achieve graduation rate has significantly increased over the last four years to 73.8 percent. The virtual academy graduation rate for 2022 was 77 percent.  The schools will continue their interventions to help increase the graduation rates and strengthen the partnerships with various agencies to help students be successful in their education and graduate.

Paul Lappin, GCHS Special Education teacher, presented information about the proposed Coffee Shop Trip. The board approved the trip to Branson, Missouri.

During new business, Dr. Joe Alcorta, Director of Human Resources, discussed long-term substitute teacher benefits.   It was a first read of a contract for long-term substitute teacher benefits.  The board did not take any action on the item.

Jason Johnson, Assistant Superintendent, presented information on the district calendar.  The board provided feedback that they heard from the community on the school calendar.  All of that information will be complied and used to create the 2023-24 school calendar.

Drew Thon, Garden City High School Athletic Director, talked about getting new video boards for Buffalo Stadium and for The Garden gymnasium at the school.  The board discussed and voted to move forward with the Athletic Director to pursue anchor sponsors for the video boards.

The Board approved the following items during the meeting.  They include: minutes of the October 17th and 27th Board of Education meetings. The Garden City High School Pole Vault Pit and Hurdle bid from M-F Athletics in the amount of $43,895.00. Utility Golf Cart for Garden City High School bid from Hi-Plains Farm Equipment for $15,204.00. A Plant Facilities power washer bid from Bart Baker Services, Inc., for $11,413.00. Cafeteria HVAC Upgrade at Alta Brown Elementary School bid from Tatro Plumbing Co., Inc., for $326,288.00. A kitchen exhaust at Horace Good Middle School from Tatro Plumbing Co., Inc., for $169,597.00. New Course at GC Achieve – Literature and Film. Board of Education Standards. Board Policy IE Instructional Arrangements. An agreement with GMCN Architects for partial re-roof design fees of Alta Brown Elementary School.

The board approved the ESSER Premium Pay for district staff.  This helps to retain staff in the district.

The board held an executive session at the end of the meeting.  The executive session was for personnel matters for non-elected personnel.  No action was taken at the end of the executive sessions.

The next meeting of the Board of Education will be Monday, December 5, 2022, at 6:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming Street.
