Garden City High School Media Center Policies and Procedures                                                                                                                                      Hours: Monday thru Thursday - 7:30AM to 3:45PM, Fridays: 7:30AM to 3:30PM.                                                                                                                   

When Night School is in session Library hours are extended until 5:30 PM Monday thru Thursday, Friday hours remain the same.

The school media center and writing lab provides a variety of materials and equipment for student use.  All students are asked to be aware of the following policies and procedures concerning use of the Media Center and Writing Lab facilities:

ID's are required for checkout and are to be worn at all times.
Students are responsible for all fines, damages, and lost articles.
Individual students that report to the media center are required to sign in and sign out with their agenda when they arrive and leave the Media Center.
No backpacks or other items for carrying books and materials are allowed when classes come to the Media Center.
Absolutely no food or drink of any kind is allowed in the Media Center.
Overdue fines are 10 cents per school day per item checked out. 
Students may not check out anything if they have fines or overdue materials until these responsibilities are taken care of.  Reference books are for overnight checkout only.  All other books are checked out for a two-week period. Books may be renewed.
Portable music players (tape players, CD players, radios, etc.) are not allowed in the Media Center at any time. This includes before school, lunch, and after school.
Please do not re-shelve books!  Improperly shelved book appear to be lost books. Place books on carts or brown tables at the end of book shelves.

There is a checkout limit of five books per student. We ask that students limit this to one reference book, and two regular books per subject. Magazines, vertical files and videos are not available for student checkout.                                                
Please note that students must maintain possession of their personal belongings at all times.  GCHS Library will not be responsible for missing items.

 

OPPORTUNITY PERIOD PASSES

     The Media Center and Writing Lab are open for student use during Opportunity Period. They are to be used for research only. Leisure reading, Internet surfing, and socializing with friends are not allowed during this period. To come to the Media Center during Opportunity Period, a student must:

Get a pass from the library before Opportunity Period starts on the day they plan to attend. Students must have a pass from the media center in order to come.

Students must show I.D. in order to receive a pass. These passes are dated and color-coded (green - library...blue - writing lab) and must have the student's name written on them.

Misuse of passes and/or misbehavior during OP will result in losing Media Center passing privileges. The Media Center staff will contact teachers via e-mail concerning any student who does not report for OP.

For library use only, there is a 6 pass limit per month. This is to allow all students the chance to use the library during OP.

COMPUTER USAGE PROCEDURES

     The Media center has two computer labs and several library computers for student and staff use. Teachers must sign up to reserve a writing lab for class use. Library computers are on a first come, first served basis. The following are general guidelines for computer use in the Media Center:

Internet passwords will be given to students one time. If students forget their password, there will be a $1.00 charge to get it again.

Students must have a signed AUP on file to use the Internet or e-mail. Internet use is NOT a sharing program. DO NOT allow others to use your Internet account.

Internet chat rooms, hotmail or any other web-based e-mail programs are NOT allowed. No games of any kind are allowed.

Only printing of school assignments and/or Internet research is allowed. NO PICTURES! DO NOT print directly from the Internet; cut and paste needed information into Microsoft Word. Remember to include source information for your "Works Cited" page. Students must get permission to print to the laser printers - these are for FINAL drafts of papers and assignments ONLY.

Scanners are available in the library for student and staff use. A copier is also available at 10 cents per copy.
