Pre-Collegiate Teacher Preparation Program

The Pre-Collegiate Teacher Preparation program will introduce high school students to the Education and Training Career Cluster.  Students will learn the basics of what it takes to become a teacher in elementary and secondary schools.  Any student who is interested in becoming a teacher in the future should take these courses.    

Course Descriptions

Introduction to Education

Grade- 9,10                  Credits- ½ 

This course introduces students to the basics of education.  Students will examine the needs of learners through 1) meeting the learning needs of individual students, 2) preparation and planning of lessons using a wide variety of materials, 3) organizing the classroom space to optimize learning & 4) exploring what professionalism means in a teaching career.   

                                           
 

Teaching 101

Grade- 10-12                 Credits- ½ credit

This course provides the fundamental knowledge of the subject matter and methodology in the Education and Training Career Cluster.  Students will explore 1) planning and preparing lessons, 2) setting instructional goals, 3) designing student assessment, 4) establishing a positive learning environment and 5) instruction and learning activities.

Prerequisite: Introduction to Education or Instructor Permission  

 

 

 

     

Teaching 102

Grade- 10-12        Credits- ½ credit

This course will provide further instruction in the Education and Training Career Cluster.  Students will 1) demonstrate knowledge of children of various ages, 2) design instruction to meet students age/grade level, 3) explore a variety of resources and instructional materials, 4) manage student behavior, 5) organize physical space and 6) reflect on teaching as a career.

Prerequisite: Teaching 101

Exploring Teaching I & II

Grade- 11, 12 Credits- ½

Exploring Teaching gives students the opportunity to go into elementary and middle level classrooms (Kindergarten level through 6th grade) and investigate careers in education.  Students will be required to keep and turn in a portfolio containing the daily journal of their activities in the classroom, individual work with the classroom students they have been assigned to work with, and other assignments as required by the teacher.  Students must have their own transportation to and from the classrooms.  Attendance is required and closely monitored.  Students having accumulated three (3) unexcused absences during the semester class will be in jeopardy of failing and will not be able to enroll in another section of the class in the future.

Prerequisite:  Introduction to Education, Teaching 101 and Teaching 102, Good Attendance, at least 2.5 GPA.



 

 

Students are assigned a real-life classroom experience for the semester to work hands-on with students in early childhood, head start, preschools, or elementary education.
