GENY

Selected students participate in a computer skills class two afternoons a week. These students create projects and presentations for teachers and become "computer teachers" within our school.

PTO

The Parent /Teacher Organization of Bernadine Sitts Intermediate Center is very active. It meets monthly and takes an active part in the activities of the school. This organization provides a strong force that contributes many hours of volunteer service to the school, including fund raising activities.

RED RIBBON WEEK

During the last week of October, all fifth and sixth grade students participate in a variety of group and school-wide activities which encouraged their pledge and dedication to living Drug-Free.

SPELLING BEE

All fifth and sixth grade students have the opportunity to participate in a School Spelling Bee. The top winners compete in a County Spelling Bee, and these top winners are eligible to go to the state competition.

MORNING CHOIR

A dedicated group of singers meet every morning at 7:30 to practice. They perform at school programs and other community events.

BSIC ORCHESTRA

5th and 6th Grade Orchestra classes meet every other day, opposite Physical Education classes.  All orchestra students have a Christmas concert in December and the annual "String Fever" concert in April along with the orchestras from Charles O. Stones, Kenneth Henderson and Abe Hubert Middle Schools.  Students in 6th Grade orchestra get to go on tour to some elementary schools in the Spring.

BSIC BAND PROGRAM

Students at BSIC have the opportunity to participate in the band program.  Beginning Band is offered to both 5th and 6th graders.  Advanced Band is offered for second year students only.  The school provides limited instruments for students unable to get their own.  Students not only learn how to play their individual instrument, they also learn music theory, appreciation, composition and history.  School-wide reading, problem-solving, math and writing exercises are included as part of the band curriculum.

Enrichment activities for band students include performing in concerts, recitals, regional band days, music festivals, mini-tours at the elementary schools and special performances.  Private lessons are available as needed before school.  Community members are used extensively as mentors for beginning students.

BSIC BANK

The BSIC Bank is ran by the students.  Students may apply for banking positions such as president, teller, marketing or customer representative.  Employees from Security Savings Bank also oversee bank operations.  All accounts opened and deposits made at the school bank are real with earning interest and receiving a quarterly statement like any other bank account.  Withdrawals may also be made from accounts at any Security Savings Bank location.  The bank is open every Thursday from 8:00-8:25 in the front hallway.
For additional information on how to open an account, you can contact the school at (620) 276-5345 or call Security Savings Bank at (620) 276-6971.

STUCO

Bernadine Sitts Student Council is a group of students chosen to represent their classroom by their teacher.  If the student does not wish to be on the council, they may decline.  Students are chosen based on grades, attendance and how well they follow and model our school culture of dignity and respect.

Students must maintain grades (not failing a class).  A student may be removed from the council if the grade does not improve.  If a representative consistently misses meetings, the teacher is contacted and asked to select another representative.  A council member referred to the office will automatically be removed from the Student Council.  The student, the student's parents, the student's teacher and the council sponsor must sign a contract listing all of the above.  Student Council members meet weekly and are required to inform their class of any decisions or upcoming events.

Student Council helps with school related activities such as Math Night and Literacy Night.  They help at conference times by greeting parents and escorting them to classrooms if needed.  They plan for a school-wide Spirit Week.  Depending on the year and time factors, activities may be planned for other times, such as Martin Luther King Day.  Student Council selects an agency each Christmas season and asks for donations from students and staff.

FAMILY LITERACY NIGHT

Our students have many opportunities to engage in meaningful activities that encourage them to become life-long readers. Parents, siblings, grandparents, and/or guardians participate in Family Literacy Night by reading to their children and enjoying the various activities. Activities include: a book walk, board games, making bookmarks, and various other activities centered around literacy. A silent auction is displayed with baskets from each of the classroom teams and a meal is also served.

ART

The art program is based on a Discipline Based Art Education approach. Students are taught through art aesthetics, art history, art production, and art criticism. Students experiences also include cross curricular activities, such as the 30 minutes of silent reading time a week, and 15 minutes of writing time allotted a week. A variety of media and techniques are available to students in this semester long program.

KEYBOARDING

Bernadine Sitts Intermediate Center uses computers as an integral part of all aspects of teaching and learning. The keyboarding lab plays a valuable part in this process. The students learn the basics of keyboarding and puts those skills to use. They learn to key in material correctly, proofread documents, correct mistakes, and print out their work. Letters and reports are a part of a list of documents the students work with. These are lifelong skills the students are learning.

MUSIC KEYBOARDING

The General Music Class at Bernadine Sitts uses the Music In Education series by Yamaha which utilizes a computer served keyboard system to teach music. The series teaches everything from steady beat to chord progression using the keyboards, movement and singing.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Our physical education program is philosophically driven by the "Every Child' s a Winner" concept. The program is noncompetitive and low keyed in traditional team sports. In 1995-96 USD #457 adopted the Fitness Gram published by the Cooper Center for Aerobic Fitness in Dallas, Texas, to track student fitness.

TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION

The purpose of this program is to introduce students, at the fifth/sixth grade level, to technology and to self-directed learning. The Learner Organization is the management of students, including mission folders, management sheets, and a moving message board. The curricula is called missions, and includes written instructions, videos, software, equipment and hands-on activities. The goals and outcomes of the Synergistic Introduction to Technology program are to develop skills and attitudes in the following areas: teamwork, communication skills, computation skills, reading, following directions, problem solving, attitudes toward attendance and punctuality, work ethic, record keeping, productivity, writing skills, neatness, completeness, and the desire to do the right thing just because it's right, not because somebody is watching.

WATCH D.O.G.S.

Watch D.O.G.S. - acronym for Dads Of Great Students.  The Watch D.O.G.S. program focuses on the prevention of violence in our children's schools and aims to provide a positive, unobtrusive, active role-model for children through the volunteering of fathers and father-figures in their children's schools.  When fathers are involved, their children learn more, perform better in school and exhibit healthier behavior.  In essence, the objective of the program is "To turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers" (Watch D.O.G.S. Across America, 2004).

FAMILY MATH NIGHT

Family Math Night is an annual event where students are able to bring their families for an evening of food, math activities and prizes.  After a greeting, families have the option to fill out their estimates on various guessing jars.  They then work their way towards the cafeteria for a chili supper.  After supper, students lead their families through various math activities throughout the building.  Problem solving and enriched technology activities focus on the state curriculum and school improvement plan.  The exciting evening opens communication between our school and our students' families.
