7th BASIC ART

This is a basic class for students who have little or no art experience but would like to learn more about art. The students will be able to experiment with many kinds of art media and projects including: watercolor, tempera, ceramics, clay, printmaking and culture. Students will supply their own water colors, tempera, markers, colored pencils, rulers, scissors, pencils, erasers and glue.

ONE SEMESTER, 1/2 CREDIT

7th COMMERCIAL ART

Basic Fine Arts studio preparation for High school art classes. This transition class includes application of the elements and principles of design theory through two dimensional media-drawing; painting; printmaking; graphics design; and photography and three dimensional media-metal smiting, sculpture; clay, fiber art and mixed media. Art history basic identification and art critique/appreciation are also applied. A focus on caricatures and cartoons is explored through student themes.

8th BASIC ART

Basic art careers art explored through fine arts media which include two dimensional art-drawing, painting; printmaking; graphics design; photography and three dimensional art-metal smithing; sculpture; clay; fiber art and mixed media. This experience reveals the relevance of art in every day life and the application of fine arts in the world of work.

8th CRAFTS AND DESIGN

Basic elements of design will be applied as students explore different crafts, jewelry, weaving, paper making, sculpture and ceramics. Students will supply their own rug yarn, marketers, colored pencils, watercolors, scissors, glue, and ruler.

COMPUTERS

7th INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS (ITC)

This course is designed to introduce the student to the world of computer technology and includes a variety of hands-on experience activities in software applications, word processing, data base, spreadsheets, BASIC programming, keyboarding, computer graphics, computer history, and basic computer literacy. After completing this course students can take the Computer Software Fundamentals, or BASIC programming courses or both.

ONE SEMESTER, 1/2 CREDIT

8th TECHNOLOGY CONCEPTS

Students will have the opportunity to learn and practice keyboarding techniques and to learn terminology and concepts that will help them to develop keyboarding skills with the goal of keying 40 NWPM(net words per minute.) Students will also receive introductory instructions in technology concepts, word processing, database, and spreadsheet. Students’ proficiency in this class, passing 80% of Assessments, will determine the entry level at which they may enroll in the High School computer Classes.

Family and Consumer Sciences Technology

7th INTRODUCTION TO FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY

This course is designed to allow students to investigate areas of technology in one semester. Students will work in various modules with a lab partner and work out of self-directed activity manuals. Cost of this course is $5.00.

7th SPANISH A

This class is a basic conversational Spanish class. Students learn everyday vocabulary with which to communicate and write. Pronunciation, spelling and some reading in Spanish are emphasized. Grammar and vocabulary will be taught. Some of the vocabulary will include: alphabet, numbers, colors, days of the week, months of the year, weather, and telling time. Exploration of Spanish speaking cultures will also be emphasized.

Spanish speakers are NOT advised to take this course.

ONE SEMESTER, 1/2 CREDIT

This class is a continuation of the study of conversational Spanish. The emphasis is on improved pronunciation, increased speaking, spelling skills, reading and writing in Spanish, and more vocabulary. The vocabulary will include: family, numbers, clothing, food, body parts, transportation, occupations, and sports.

PREREQUISITE: The completion and passing of 7th grade Spanish A or demonstrated knowledge of basic conversational Spanish.

8th INTRODUCTION TO INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

This course is designed to allow students to investigate areas of technology in one semester. Students will work in various modules with a lab partner and work out of self-direct activity manuals. The various technology lab modules will include electronics, electricity, communication systems, robotics, transportation, manufacturing, flight technology rocketry, applied physics, research and design, engineering, and computer applications. Cost for this course is $5.00

Music

7th GRADE BAND

Membership in the 7th Grade Band is open to students who have achieved an intermediate level of proficiency on their instrument. The purpose of the 7th Grade Band is to study intermediate instrumental techniques. The band will perform at some concerts during the year.

PERFORMANCE ATTENDANCE CLAUSE: Attendance at every performance is required, with rare exceptions made only with prior approval of the director.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Band 6.

ONE SEMESTER, 1/2 CREDIT

8th GRADE BAND

Membership in 8th Grade Band is open to students who achieved and intermediate level of proficiency on their instrument. The purpose of the band is to study advanced intermediate instrumental techniques, and to represent Abe Hubert Middle School at music contests and concerts during the year. Balanced instrumentation is maintained, with membership determined by the approval of the director.

PERFORMANCE ATTENDANCE CLAUSE: Attendance at every performance is required, with the rare exceptions made only with prior approval of the director.

ONE SEMESTER, 1/2 CREDIT

8th JAZZ BAND

The Jazz Band is a select musical organization for advanced musicians. The purpose of the Jazz Band is to study and perform various jazz styles including swing, blues, pop and rock. Jazz ensemble instrumentation will be adhered to as mush as possible.

PREREQUISITE: Approval of the instructor.

ONE SEMESTER, 1/2 CREDIT

7th GIRLS CHOIR

This class is available to ALL seventh grade girls and will prepare the student for set objectives of the eighth grade choir. Unison and two-part singing will be stressed along with ear training and reading music. A variety of music will be learned.

ATTENDANCE AT EVERY PERFORMANCE IS REQUIRED, WITH RARE EXCEPTIONS MADE ONLY WITH PRIOR APPROVAL OF THE DIRECTOR. (Most performances are in the evening.)

ONE SEMESTER, 1/2 CREDIT

7th MIXED CHORUS

This class is available to ALL seventh grade boys and girls. It will prepare the student for set objectives for the eighth grade choir. A variety of music for the changing voice will be stressed along with ear training and reading music.

ATTENDANCE AT EVERY PERFORMANCE IS REQUIRED, with rare exceptions made only with prior approval of the director. (Most performances are in the evening.)

Enrollment in this course is open to eighth grade girls. A variety of music will be performed throughout the year. Reading and part singing skills will be taught along with general vocal techniques.

ONE SEMESTER, 1/2 CREDIT

8th MIXED CHORUS

This course is open to any student wishing to develop singing skills. An audition is not required. A variety of music will be learned. Reading and part singing skills will be taught along with general vocal techniques.

ATTENDANCE AT EVERY PERFORMANCE IS REQUIRED, with rare exceptions made only with prior approval of the director. (Most performances are in the evening).

ONE SEMESTER, 1/2 CREDIT

The Orchestra is a class open to all string players who have had previous instruction in violin, viola, cello and string bass. Students must have reached the intermediate level of proficiency on their instrument. Membership is determined by the approval of the director. The emphasis is on music and string fundamentals. In addition to performing traditional school concerts, the orchestra participates in as many music festivals, concerts, and competitions as possible. Attendance at every performance will be required, with rare exceptions made only with prior approval of the director. Audition is not necessary.

In this class, students will participate in a district-adopted curriculum called “Physical Focus.” In this curriculum, students will participate in a wide variety of team and individual sports, along with recreational activities that include mass participation by all students. This class will also provide the opportunity to develop lifetime skills and activities throughout the semester. Each student will test his/her individual fitness level using the Prudential Fitness Gram Test. This will occur at the beginning and end of each semester. Each class will also integrate weight lifting into their weekly routine. Proper weight lifting techniques, along with health and safety, will be emphasized at all times. There is no uniform for this class, however, students are required to dress-out and participate for all activities.
